    Dm ~

                Dm
There's a Spanish train that runs between
Bb
    Quadalquivir and old Saville,
C
and at dead of night the whistle blows,
                A7 Dm
and people hear she's running still.

                   Dm
And then they hush their children back to sleep,
    Bb
lock the doors, upstairs they creep,
        C
for it is said that the souls of the dead
                A7 Dm
fill that train ten thousand deep!

             Dm Bb C Dm
Well, a railwayman lay dying with his people by his side,
                                       Bb A7
his family were crying, knelt in prayer before he died.
          Bb C
But above his head just a-waiting for the dead,
             A7 Dm
was the Devil with a twinkle in his eye,
           Bb C
"Well God's not around and look what I've found:
C Dm
    This one's mine !"

           Dm Bb C Dm
Just then the Lord himself appeared in a blinding flash of light,
                                         Bb A7
and shouted at the devil, "Get thee hence to endless night !"
             Bb C
But the Devil just grinned and said, "I may have sinned,
                 A7 Dm
but there's no need to push me around,
               Bb C C Dm
I got him first, so you can do your worst, he's going underground !"

              Dm Bb C Dm
"Well I think I'll give you one more chance," said the Devil with a smile,
                                            Bb A7
"So throw away that stupid lance, it's really not your style",
      Bb C A7 Dm
"Joker is the name, poker is the game, we'll play right here on this bed,
          Bb C C Dm
and then we'll bet for the biggest stakes yet, the souls of the dead!"

                 Bb C Dm
And I said "Look out, Lord, he's going to win,
         Bb C Dm
the sun is down and the night is riding in.
           Bb A7 Dm Gm
That train is dead on time, many souls are on the line.
          Bb C Dm
    oh, Lord, he's gonna win!"

              Dm
Well the railway man he cut the cards
            Bb C Dm
and he dealt them each a hand of five

And for the Lord he was praying hard
              Bb A7
or that train he'd have to drive.

               Bb C
Well, the Devil he had three aces and a king,
             A7 Dm
and the Lord, he was running for a straight,
                 Bb C
He had the queen and the knave and nine and ten of spades,
C Dm
all he needed was the eight.

                  Dm
And then the Lord he called for one more card,
             Bb C Dm
but he drew the diamond eight,

And the Devil said to the son of God,
          Bb A7
"I believe you've got it straight.

        Bb C
So deal me one for the time has come
             A7 Dm
to see who'll be the king of this place,
        Bb C
But as he spoke, from beneath his cloak,
C Dm
    he slipped another ace !

          Dm
Ten thousand souls was the opening bid,
            Bb C Dm
and it soon went up to fifty-nine,

but the Lord didn't see what the Devil did,
                    Bb A7
and he said, "that suits me fine",

                     Bb C
"I'll raise you high to a hundred and five,
           A7 Dm
and forever put an end to your sins."
             Bb C C Dm
But the Devil let out a mighty shout, "My hand wins !"

                 Bb C Dm
And I said "Lord, oh Lord, you let him win,
         Bb C Dm
the sun is down and the night is riding in.
           Bb A7 Dm Gm
That train is dead on time, many souls are on the line,
        Bb C Dm
oh Lord, don't let him win."

                 Dm
Well, that Spanish train still runs between,
Bb
    Quadalquivir and old Saville.
            C
And at dead of night the whistle blows,
                A7 Dm
and people fear she's running still.

         Dm
And far away in some recess
         Bb
the Lord and the Devil are now playing chess.
                C
The Devil still cheats and wins more souls,
        A7 Dm
and as for the Lord, well, he's just doing his best.

                 Bb C Dm
And I said "Lord, oh Lord, you've got to win,
         Bb C Dm
the sun is down and the night is riding in.
           Bb A7 Dm Gm
That train is still on time, oh, my soul is down the line,
        Bb C Dm
oh Lord, you've got to win."

 D B7
Hello darling, this is the army,
      Em
I've just got the time to write,
   A
Today we attack, there's no turning back,
     D G D A
The boys they're all ready for the fight,

 D B7
Yes, I'm well but this place is like hell,
      Em
They call it Passchendaele,
    A
In nineteen seventeen the war must be ending,
             D G D
The General said this attack will not fail,

         G F#
So I'm writing down this simple little melody
           Bm F#m Em F#
When you play it my love, think of me...
            Em D A D Em
We'll be together in this song for you,
    A D B7 Em A D G D
And it goes La la la...
 A D B7 Em A D G D A
Sing it darling, La la la...

      D B7
They got old Bill and the Sergeant is still out there,
 Em
Wounded in some shellhole,
      A
They say this war will end all wars,
    D G D A
Oh God I really hope it will,

    D B7
Oh how's old England, are they still singing
       Em
Those songs that we loved to sing,
     A
When all this is over, we'll go sailing in Dover,
          D G D
Catching fish like we used to with a string,

      G F#
Oh I miss you, I miss you, I miss you so!
         Bm F#m Em F#
If they get me my love you will know...
                   Em D A D Em
We'll always be together in this song for you...
    A D B7 Em A D G D
And it goes La la la...
   A D B7 Em A D G D A D B7 Em A D G D A D B7 Em A D G D A
I have to go now...

a summer run in jail would be proposed.

Tabbed by: JonPebble

CAPO 5

Verse1:
  Am C G Am
A spaceman came travelling on his ship from afar,
      C G F F G
'twas light years of time since his mission did start
    Am Em F Am
And over a village he halted his craft,
       C G F F G Am
And it hung in the sky like a star, just like a star.

Verse2:
   Am C G Am
He followed a light and came down to a shed,
        C G F F G
Where a mother and child were lying there on a bed,
  Am Em F Am
A bright light of silver shone round his head,
       C G F F G Am
And he had the face of an angel, and they were afraid.

Verse3:
         Am C G Am
Then the stranger spoke, he said "Do not fear,
  C G F F G
I come from a planet a long way from here,
    Am Em F Am
And I bring a message for mankind to hear",
    C G F F G Am
And suddenly the sweetest music filled the air.

Chorus:
    F G Am Em F Am
And it went La, la, la, La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
C G F F G
La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
Am Em F Am
La, la, la, La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
C G F F G Am
Peace and goodwill to all of men, and love for the child.

F G Am Em F Am
La, la, la, La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
C G F F G
La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
Am Em F Am
La, la, la, La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
C G F
oh, oh, oh.

Verse4:
     Am C G Am
This lovely music went trembling through the ground,
    C G F F G
And many were wakened on hearing that sound,
    Am Em F Am
And travellers on the road, the village they found,
       C G F F G Am
By the light of that ship in the sky, which shone all around.

Verse5:
    Am C G Am
And just before dawn at the paling of the sky,
    C G F F G
The stranger returned and said "Now I must fly,
     Am Em F Am
When two thousand years of your time has gone by,
     C G F F G Am
This song will begin once again, to a babys cry".
Final Chorus:

    F G Am Em F Am
And it went La, la, la, La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
C G F F G
La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
Am Em F Am
La, la, la, La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
C G F F G Am
Peace and goodwill to all of men, and love for the child.

    F G Am Em F Am
And I hear La, la, la, La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
C G F F G
La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
Am Em F Am
La, la, la, La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
     C G F F G Am
This song will begin once again, to a babys cry".

    F G Am Em F Am
And it went La, la, la, La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
C G F F G
La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
Am Em F Am
La, la, la, La, la, la, La, la, la, La,
     C G F F G Am
This song will begin once again, to a babys cry".

Intro:
G C G C
G C G C

G C
I left my home by the ocean
G C
I left my love by the sea
G C D Dsus2
Dreaming I could sing my songs in the city

G C
I thought the streets of London
G C
 Would be paved with gold
         G C
But the only gold was in the setting sun
            D G
And these city nights are so cold

           D Dsus2
And you know that feeling when you've been too long
          D7 D7sus2
And you wanna go home and it's so strong

G C G C
I'm going home, I'm going home
          G D Em D
Oh, the leaves are falling and the wind is calling
        C Am D D7
And I must get on the road

G C G C
You'll be alone, you'll be alone
                 G D Em D
But if you're crying to the rhythm of the falling rain
      C Am D D7 G
It's alright, I'm on my way
            C G C G C G C
I'm going home, I'm going home, yeah

G C
Jilly she's got a smile in her eye
          G C
And a bed just right for two
