Track 9 of 18 on the album "Tracks" (2008)
[Intro]
CFCG7CFG7C
[Verse 1]
CF
My ears do ring and my heart does sing
CG7
When a steam train whistle blows
CF
And anywhere that train is bound
G7C
It's there I too would go
CF
I had a dream the other night
CG7
Interrupted by this sound
CF
It was the whistle of a southbound freight
G7C
Rolling through my old hometown
CF
I pinched myself, yeah, still alive
CG7
And hearing what I heard
CF
There was one toot and then another
G7C
And then, by gosh, a third
CF
They echoed through my mind
CG7
Just like a childhood memory
CF
The dreamy call of an iron horse
G7C
Was reaching out to me
[Chorus 1]
F
I know I'm dreaming
CG7
But could it really be?
CF
It started seeming
CG7C
That train was there for me
[Verse 2]
CF
That choo-choo chugged through a foggy mist
CG7
And stopped right where I stood
CF
I'd hop inside that locomotive
G7C
If I only could
CF
But this I knew was nothing more
CG7
Than a wishful little dream
CF
That toot and choo-choo couldn't really
G7C
Be what it had seemed
CF
But then, a dapper man walked up
CG7
And tipped his hat to me
CF
Well, in my sleepy state, I wondered
G7C
Who this man could be
CF
He said he came to give my dream
CG7
A special nice reward
CF
And with a smile upon his face
G7C
He bellowed, "All aboard!"
[Chorus 2]
F
Was this for real
CG7
Or just a fantasy?
CF
"Wow, what a deal!"
G7C
I shouted out with glee
[Verse 3]
CF
I climbed inside the cabin
CG7
Took a look at all the stuff
CF
And then I felt that choo-choo train
G7C
Begin to huff and puff
CF
Well, in my dream, a red bandana
CG7
Fluttered from my neck
CF
And over my shoulder, there was a cord
G7C
And I figured, "What the heck?"
CF
I wrapped my fingers 'round that cord
CG7
And slowly pulled it down
CF
And as I did, I heard that
G7C
Sweet and old familiar sound
CF
With that, the locomotive started
CG7
Chugging down the rails
CF
I gave that cord another tug
G7C
I listened to the wail
[Chorus 3]
F
I made it whistle
CG7
Yes, I'm an engineer
CF
Give it a listen
CG7C
And tell me what you hear
[Verse 4]
CF
The old conductor looked at me
CG7
And tipped his hat once more
CF
He told me it was time to leave
G7C
And he vanished in a roar
CF
Yes, dreams, alas, must always end
CG7
For every girl and boy
CF
I was rustled from my slumber
G7C
By a muffled rumbling noise
CF
I wiped the sleep dust from my eyes
CG7
And listened closely to
CF
The clear refrain of a distant train
G7C
And a plaintive "woo-woo-woo!"
CF
There's just one thing about that sound
CG7
That made me think that day
CF
The closest railroad tracks to me
G7C
Are many miles away
[Chorus 4]
F
I got to fearing
CG7
That this was still a dream
CF
What I was hearing
G7C
Was not what it might seem
[Verse 5]
CF
But soon, I heard another whistle
G7C
Hooting in the night
CF
I went to my window and looked outside
G7C
To see a wondrous sight
CF
Up in the dark but moonlit sky
CG7
Beneath a thousand stars
CF
A big black locomotive pulled
G7C
A hundred railroad cars
CF
White puffs of smoke rose from the stack
CG7
And I can faintly see
CF
That old conductor looking down
G7C
And he tipped his hat to me
CF
When in a wink, he vanished
CG7
In a trail of shiny steam
CF
I rubbed my eyes and realized
G7C
That this was not a dream
[Chorus 5]
F
I made it whistle
CG7
Yes, I'm an engineer
CF
Give it a listen
CG7C
And tell me what you hear
